In nature, lead (Pb) usually occurs in combination with other metals with the most frequent combination being lead and zinc. Therefore these two metals are commonly called “sister metals”.

The most important application of lead is the productions of batteries. Lead batteries are used in all kinds of vehicles, but also for industrial purposes and in special applications, such as emergency power supply systems or equipment for the storage of electricity produced by solar energy installations. Moreover, lead is used by the construction industry, the glass industry, in the chemical sector and in cable production.

Lead is traded mostly in the form of ingots which, depending on the producer, have a piece-weight between 25 and 50 kgs each. The purity of refined lead is standardized by DIN EN 12659 and ranges from Pb 99.94 % to Pb 99.99 %. Besides that, lead is also produced according to DIN EN 12548 which is valid for alloys with additions such as antimony, tellurium and copper.
